OTTAWA — The mother of a 15-year-old special needs student at Nepean High School said the school allows students to access the Internet over an open, unsecured network. She claims the school was aware that her daughter was contacting an online predator using a school-issued laptop.
Laura Lobay’s daughter, who has an autism spectrum disorder, tried to run away from home last May to meet a 28-year-old man she chatted with online, the Ottawa Citizen reports. Although the girl was intercepted by police before leaving the city, she continued to contact the man using a laptop the school gave her to type assignments.
Lobay said she repeatedly asked school officials to remove Internet access from her daughter’s computer, but they did not comply until Lobay threatened to pull her daughter out of the school last week.
