Mother of Bus-Stop Beating Victim Sues District

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. — The mother of a student at Deerfield Beach Middle School has filed a negligence lawsuit against the Broward School District, alleging that better school security would have prevent the attack that left her daughter with permanent injuries and brain damage.

Josie Lou Ratley, 16, was severely beaten at a school bus stop by another student whom she did not know, but had argued with via text message, the Sun Sentinel reports. Wayne Treacy, also 16, has been charged with first-degree attempted murder and could serve a maximum of 50 years in jail if convicted.

The lawsuit states that the district failed to adequately supervise the bus pick up area. Treacy repeatedly hit Ratley’s head on the concrete and stepped on her until the attack was stopped by a teacher.

The lawsuit asks for unspecified damages greater than $15,000.
