A former New Jersey high school student who was charged with sexually assaulting a classmate in the school four years ago was sentenced to three years in prison on July 10.
Police say Jaime Urbina, who was a 19-year-old senior at the time, beat and sexually assaulted a 15-year-old classmate in a stairway at Clifton High School in 2011, according to northjersey.com. Urbina was accompanied by a 17-year-old student who was charged with three years in juvenile court. Urbina will also have to register as a sex offender and will be under lifelong parole supervision.
Police say the victim waited several weeks to report the crime out of fear, but was eventually convinced to go to police by a friend.
The assault sparked security upgrades from the school district. Teachers and supervisors now patrol the hallways of the spacious high school and security cameras were installed inside and outside the building to enhance student safety.
