Things were not looking good on Sept. 8, 2013, when 47-year-old Anibal Rub
ina collapsed on a Sacramento State soccer field. Despite attempts at CPR, Rubina remained unconscious without a pulse for roughly five minutes.
When Campus Safety Officer Thelma Mathews arrived on the scene, she grabbed an automated external defibrillator (AED) from the trunk of her patrol vehicle and shocked the patient. The man suddenly began breathing again and was taken to a local hospital, where he recovered.
Above, Mathews is pictured with the man she saved (third from right), who is holding the lucky defibrillator. “Now I have two birthdays,” Rubina later joked.
