Campus Officer Line-of-Duty Deaths by Cause
Campus law enforcement officers died in the same ways as their brother and sister officers in non-campus environments. They were shot, died during traffic stops, killed in fights, died in auto crashes, killed during burglaries and dealing with suspicious individuals, and were ambushed or assaulted, to name a few of the unfortunate means. One area of divergence with non-campus officers relates to officers who died of heart attacks while performing their official duties. While their fellow officers also died of heart attacks and job-related illnesses, heart attacks were the leading source of the deaths of the 43 campus officers.
