Low-Cost Ways to Improve Your Campus Security

CPTED
A big part of crime prevention through environmental design, or CPTED, is common sense. How visible is each area of your campus (especially around entrances) to people in your school buildings? Are there objects that obstruct the views from windows? Are there any areas on campus a potential intruder could use to hide?
You don’t need to have a PhD in risk management to answer this stuff, and these are questions all security managers should consider. Sometimes, the solution is as simple as talking to a landscaper about trimming down a bush more than usual. Even bigger projects like removing trees are often only opposed by people advocating their aesthetic benefits, but campus beauty should never be prioritized over campus security.
