4. BE AWARE OF PATIENT BEHAVIORS
Since an estimated 80% of violence against nurses is committed by patients, being attuned to patient behavior that could be a precursor to violence is critical.
Some possible indicators of violence include:
- Speaking loudly or yelling
- Swearing
- Threatening tone of voice
- Physical appearance (neglected clothing, hygiene)
- Arms held tight across the chest
- Clenched fists
- Heavy breathing
- Pacing, agitation
- A scared look signifying fear or high anxiety
- A fixed stare
- Aggressive or threatening posture
- Throwing objects
- Quick changes in behavior
- Indications of intoxication (alcohol or drugs)
