Approximately 500 teachers in Pennsylvania’s Millcreek Township School District were given 16-inch baseball bats as part of their active shooter training, reports NBC News.
Superintendent William Hall says that while the bats should be a last line of defense, they are meant as a symbolic reminder that fighting back is an option.
“We passed them out, with the goal being we wanted every room to have one of these,” he said. “Unfortunately, we’re in a day and age where one might need to use them to protect ourselves and our kids.”
The bats cost the district $1,800.
