Officer Kameron Irving (left), City of Hope – Duarte
“Bike Officer Kameron Irving was assigned to Parking Structure – A (PSA) and while patrolling the structure on the northeast corner, she encountered an older female who appeared to be out of sorts and reflecting a transient state. As Irving approached, she noticed that the female had a bright red face, while shuffling her feet, instead of walking normally. In addition, Irving detected that the person had dawned multiple layers of clothing, and this became concerning due to the excessive heat advisory for the day. Irving inquired to see if the person was okay, and she replied that she was. However, during her verbal response, she was mumbling. After asking additional questions, the person was swaying back and forth reflecting an unstable stance. Irving escorted her over to a shaded area and asked her to take a seat for safety measures. She complied. Irving radioed and notified Dispatch that there is female person in the PSA appearing to be experiencing Heat Exhaustion. The Lead Officer responded, and EMS was subsequently summoned. Afterwards, it was determined that this person was a City of Hope employee. Irving made sure that someone was monitoring this person, and she proceeded to block off traffic for EMS arrival. The employee proceeded to remove several layers of clothing to minimize heat exposure. The House Supervisor was notified of the situation, and subsequently, LAFD Paramedics arrived and administered medical assistance. The employee was transported to Kaiser Permanente Baldwin Park for further medical assistance. If Irving had not been at her post, this employee’s situation could have worsened. Irving was able to assist this employee by utilizing her Heat Illness Prevention training and possibly saving her life. Thank you, Kameron, for a job well done!”
